Vervet monkeys socialize more when time budget constraints are experimentally reduced

چکیده

In species that live in stable groups, successful management of time budget (i.e., the proportion involved different behaviours) and social relationships has been proposed to be a key variable affecting individual fitness. Such is limited by constraints, which are group size season dependancy. However, link between constraints grooming patterns as means service never studied experimentally. Here, we reduced three wild vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops pygerythrus) groups offering them high quality food for 60 min morning. We conducted 10 trials summer winter. found monkeys indeed spent foraging during rest those days compared control increased spread over more bouts. Individuals did not get access still participated much eat. accordance with our expectations, network analysis revealed larger on supplementation days: used their extra socialize members. Furthermore, following predictions, effect provisioning was usually stronger winter (when scarce shorter) than summer, number conflicts decreased days. Finally, despite fact adults juveniles all days, few age differences emerged way manage budget. Interestingly, some these seem independent size. conclusion, seize opportunity increase behaviours if reduced.

Structural Labor Supply Models when Budget Constraints are Nonlinear

Despite the advantages of structural labor supply methods, many recent papers cite the arguments of MaCurdy et al. as a reason for avoiding structural methods, and instead use simple estimation methods such as differences in differences. This paper examines the role of economic assumptions in structural labor supply methods and how some of the assumptions may be relaxed. We first show the sourc...

Hippocampal Neuron Populations Are Reduced in Vervet Monkeys With Fetal Alcohol Exposure

Prenatal exposure to beverage alcohol is a major cause of mild mental retardation and developmental delay. In nonendangered alcohol-preferring vervet monkeys, we modeled the most common nondysmorphic form of fetal alcohol syndrome disorder with voluntary drinking during the third trimester of pregnancy. Here, we report significant numerical reductions in the principal hippocampal neurons of fet...

Wild Vervet Monkeys Trade Tolerance and Specific Coalitionary Support for Grooming in Experimentally Induced Conflicts

Grooming is a key social behavior in many primate species. Research has focused on three important aspects: the short- and long-term trading patterns of grooming for itself and/or for other commodities like tolerance or coalitionary support, the issue of whether exchanges are a convincing example for reciprocity, and what decision rules underlie trading. These issues remain largely unresolved d...

Anatomic Brain Asymmetry in Vervet Monkeys

Asymmetry is a prominent feature of human brains with important functional consequences. Many asymmetric traits show population bias, but little is known about the genetic and environmental sources contributing to inter-individual variance. Anatomic asymmetry has been observed in Old World monkeys, but the evidence for the direction and extent of asymmetry is equivocal and only one study has es...
